In the early morning hours of January 18, 1979, Deputy Sheriff David G. Livengood, and his K-9 partner, Sarge, we brutally murdered while trying to apprehend two persons who had burglarized Davidson's Army and Navy Discount Store in Oakland.  On this cold blustery morning, Deputy Livengood and Sarge paid the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties protecting the citizens of Garrett County.

Deputy Livengood confronted the two suspects, one of which was a member of the outlaw Pagan's motorcycle gang and the other was a candidate for the group, carrying stolen property from the rear of the store.  While trying to apprehend the suspects, Deputy Livengood was brutally shot and killed.  While trying to protect his partner, K-9 Sarge was brutally stabbed and killed by the suspects with a samurai sword.  The suspects fled in the deputy's policy cruiser and were later apprehended in West Virginia.  Both suspects were arrested, found guilty of murder and both were sentenced to life in the Department of Corrections.

This memorial was dedicated to Deputy Livengood and Sarge by the Garrett County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #99 on January 18, 2009.
