Deep Creek Lake is the perfect place to base explorations of nearly 90,000 acres of Public Lands. Hiking trails range in difficulty from easy walks on well maintained trails, to more wilderness trails that may feature steep climbs and rugged terrain. Your best bet is to explore the trail description links and check out trails you feel are in your difficulty range. You'll be amazed how occupied and peaceful the kids are when out exploring a trail. There's magic under every leaf....waiting to be discovered.

You can also learn how to go safely hiking and discover new trails by going on a guided hike. Groups can hire a guide to lead them on everything from a gentle Swallow Falls Nature walk to a challenging 3 hour round trip uphill hike to the top of Big Savage Mountain which offers a glorious view atop the summit ledges.

Trail Selections

Rugged Wilderness Trails: Big Savage Mountain trail from the Savage Dam Tailwaters to the summit, Lost Lands, Deep Creek Lake St. Pk. Firetower Trail

Medium: Meadow Mountain, Monroe Run, Poplar Lick, Garrett Trail System
Easy Trails: Swallow Falls Trail, Swallow Falls State Park (pictured left top), Brandt Mine Trail (pictured at left bottom) Deep Creek State Park

After a day's walk everything has twice its usual value. ~George Macauley Trevelyan

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. ~John Muir

Group hiking is extra special and fun.

Hikers (especially those venturing into State Wildlands or other remote areas where rescue or evacuation could be difficult) should always prepare for worst case scenarios and carry with them the following items:

  • Full water bottle (purification tablets?)
  • Snacks
  • Whistle
  • Pocket Knife
  • Dry matches

How can you explain that you need to know that the trees are still there, and the hills and the sky? Anyone knows they are. How can you say it is time your pulse responded to another rhythm, the rhythm of the day and the season instead of the hour and the minute? No, you cannot explain. So you walk. ~Author unknown

Anytime of year...a walk in the woods can do you a world of good.
